With a 17th-century farmhouse, beautiful countryside, a contemporary barn and gardens made for celebrating, Houchins wedding venue is a unique barn venue in north Essex where history, romance and modern wedding style come together
Some wedding venues look beautiful in photographs. Others have something more - a feeling, a sense of place and a story that makes you want to stay a little longer.
Houchins is one of those places.
Set in stunning countryside, Houchins combines a Grade 2 listed farmhouse, contemporary barn, beautiful grounds and a landscaped wedding garden to create an exclusive-use wedding venue where couples can celebrate exactly the way they want to.
Approximately an hour from London, with direct access from the A120 and Stansted Airport 35 minutes away, Houchins is wonderfully accessible while feeling far removed from everyday life.
From the moment you arrive, the setting has a sense of occasion. There are mature grounds, a pond and fountain, pretty gardens and an amazing outdoor space for photographs, drinks and relaxed time with guests. Inside, historic details sit alongside contemporary design, creating a traditional venue with a modern twist.
It’s this blend that has made Houchins a dream wedding venue. Since opening as a wedding venue in 2014, Houchins has hosted more than 800 events and weddings, earning its reputation as an award-winning venue and receiving recognition in the Essex Wedding Awards 2025.
For couples looking for an ideal wedding venue filled with personality, flexibility and a little bit of magic, Houchins has so much to offer.

A house with a rich history
Part of the charm of Houchins lies in its rich history going back centuries.
Records of the site date back to 1411, while the current farmhouse was built by Flemish clothiers in the 1610s. The house has witnessed centuries of Essex life and even played a role during the Civil War, when it served as a staging post.
Then, in the 1920s, Houchins welcomed one of its most famous residents - actress Tallulah Bankhead used the house as a refuge, adding another fascinating chapter to its story.
This rich history gives the house an atmosphere that no newly built wedding venue can replicate.
Yet Houchins is not trapped in the past. The historic house sits alongside a modern barn designed specifically for celebrations, giving couples the best of both worlds: indoor grandeur and outdoor simplicity, historic character and contemporary style.
This unique barn venue feels sophisticated without becoming formal and welcoming without losing its sense of occasion.

Exclusively yours
One of the biggest advantages of choosing Houchins is exclusive use.
On your wedding day, the whole venue is exclusively yours, giving you and your guests the freedom to settle in and enjoy the house, barn and grounds without sharing the space with another celebration.
Your wedding day can begin with preparations in the farmhouse before moving seamlessly into the wedding ceremony, drinks reception, wedding breakfast and evening reception. Guests can explore the grounds, enjoy the terrace and move between the different spaces as the day unfolds.
The whole planning process is designed to feel as personal as the celebration itself. The Houchins team is there to help couples create their perfect day, while the dedicated team on the wedding day makes sure everything runs smoothly.
With the venue exclusively yours, there is time to enjoy those little moments that can otherwise get lost in the rush of a big day. It is a whole venue experience, rather than simply somewhere to hold a reception.

Four ways to say ‘I do’
With four ceremony areas, Houchins offers multiple licensed options for indoor and outdoor ceremonies.
The Loggia is a beautiful option for 150 guests. The elegant structure overlooks the wedding garden and provides a romantic setting for saying ‘I do’.
There is also the Drawing Room, a more intimate setting for ceremonies of up to 25 guests. Within the historic house, it offers a beautiful sense of occasion and a wonderfully romantic atmosphere.
Nature-loving couples can choose the serene woodland ceremony space, while the Foundry provides a fourth option, offering an open space for a civil ceremony with a more contemporary feel.
With such different ceremony spaces, couples can choose the setting that reflects them rather than adapting their plans to fit the venue.
And if the weather is less than perfect, the Houchins team can help you make the most of the indoor spaces. Whether you are planning an intimate ceremony or a celebration for all your guests, there is a perfect space waiting.

A garden made for memories
For many couples, the grounds are one of the first things they fall in love with at Houchins.
The glorious wedding garden provides a beautiful backdrop throughout the wedding day, from photographs after the ceremony to reception drinks in the sunshine.
The landscaped wedding garden has been designed to feel natural and relaxed, with mature planting, lawns, trees and a pond with its own fountain.
Want garden games? There is plenty of room. Planning a relaxed outdoor drinks reception? This is the perfect space. Dreaming of golden-hour photographs? The grounds provide endless possibilities.
The garden changes character throughout the day, becoming wonderfully romantic as evening approaches, with fairy lights and outdoor lighting adding a magical glow.
For couples planning summer weddings, the outdoor space can become an extension of the celebration. Even on the hottest day, the grounds provide places for guests to relax in the shade and enjoy the countryside.
And should the weather turn, the beautiful wedding marquee provides additional flexibility.

Inside the barn
At the heart of Houchins is the contemporary barn, which combines the warmth of a traditional venue with stylish modern details.
The Grain Store is the main space for the wedding breakfast. High ceilings, natural materials and a striking fireplace give the room character, while its tasteful interior makes it easy for couples to create their own look.
Whether you are planning an elegant wedding breakfast filled with flowers and candlelight, or a relaxed celebration with colourful details, the room can be transformed around you.
The modern twist works beautifully with the historic house and grounds, creating a sense of continuity throughout the venue.
For evening celebrations, the adjoining dance barn provides space for music, a disco and your first dance without having to clear the wedding breakfast tables first.
This means the transition from wedding breakfast and evening celebrations to a full-on party can happen naturally.

Raise a glass
The drinks reception is an important part of the wedding day. It’s the moment when everyone can relax after the ceremony, raise a glass and catch up while the newlyweds disappear for photographs.
At Houchins, the Chitting Shed and Terrace provide a natural gathering point, with direct access to the wedding garden.
The Terrace Bar, added in 2023, gives the venue another stylish space for serving drinks and entertaining guests.
From reception drinks and canapés to cocktails and champagne, the outdoor areas allow guests to enjoy the setting while the wedding breakfast is prepared.
As the sun begins to set, fairy lights illuminate the grounds, and the barn takes centre stage for dancing.
It’s the kind of setting where a special day can naturally evolve from afternoon celebration into evening party.

Food to remember
Beautiful surroundings are only part of what makes a wedding memorable. Food plays a major part too, and Houchins caters for weddings in a flexible way, with in-house catering alongside a list of preferred local caterers.
That could mean a formal three-course wedding breakfast, sharing dishes, a relaxed buffet or something completely personal. Corkage options also provide flexibility for couples who want to bring their own alcohol.
The venue can accommodate up to 150 guests for a wedding breakfast, while receptions can welcome up to 180 guests.
For the evening, food can be adapted to suit the celebration, keeping guests energised for the dance floor and ensuring the wedding breakfast and evening celebrations flow seamlessly.
The Houchins team can also advise on timings, ensuring food, drinks, photographs and entertainment fit together naturally.

Getting ready for the big moment
Some of the most precious wedding memories happen before the ceremony even begins.
Houchins has two dressing rooms, allowing the wedding party to prepare on site and enjoy those all-important moments together.
There is no need to worry about travelling between a hotel and the venue. Instead, you can relax close to where the wedding will take place, enjoy breakfast, have your hair and make-up done and spend time with the people closest to you.
The dressing rooms provide space for final preparations, photographs and a glass of fizz before the ceremony.
For couples who want a stress free wedding day, having preparations, ceremony, reception and accommodation all in one location makes a huge difference.

Stay for the celebrations
Why leave when the party ends?
Houchins offers overnight accommodation for 16 people on site, allowing couples and their closest guests to stay together after the evening reception with a complimentary continental breakfast included the following morning.
The farmhouse sleeps up to 14 guests, with four bedrooms featuring private en-suites. There is also a honeymoon suite in the custom-built Cart Lodge, creating a private retreat for newlyweds.
The accommodation is just 50 metres from the barn, giving guests direct access between the sleeping accommodation and the main wedding spaces.
And new for 2026, there is even more room to stay under the stars with Glamping @ The Herbery. Five insulated luxury glamping tents have been added to the new meadow behind the farmhouse, on what was once the herb garden, increasing Houchins’ on-site sleeping capacity from 16 to 26.
Each tent comes with a king-size double bed dressed with soft linen and warm duvets, plus clothes-hanging racks. Guests can start the following morning with a continental breakfast served in the communal ‘mess tent’, while a nearby compostable loo and bathroom facilities in The Dairy provide everything needed for a comfortable stay.
Available from May to October, the glamping tents offer a relaxed, back-to-nature option for guests who want to make even more of the Houchins experience. And for the ultimate post-wedding wind-down, the traditional Scandinavian sauna, The Hide, offers panoramic views across the beautiful Essex countryside and is perfect for up to eight people.
For couples who want their wedding to become a whole weekend rather than a single day, Houchins is particularly appealing.
Arrive, settle in, have some pre-wedding celebrations, sleep and wake up together. The day after the ceremony there is time for breakfast conversations, relaxed goodbyes and a final wander around the grounds before everyone heads home.
For selected winter weddings, a free night in the farmhouse can also be included.

More than a venue
What really sets Houchins apart is the people behind it.
Planning a wedding can be exciting but sometimes overwhelming. There are suppliers to co-ordinate, menus to choose, timings to agree and hundreds of tiny decisions to make.
Houchin’s wedding co-ordinators help couples through the planning process, offering practical advice and experience without taking away the freedom to create their own celebration.
The award-winning team has worked on hundreds of weddings, so they know how to anticipate the little things that can make a difference.
From iced water waiting for guests on a warm day to helping with last-minute details, the dedicated team is there to make sure the day runs exactly as planned.
The result is a venue where couples can concentrate on enjoying themselves rather than worrying about what happens next.
Make it yours
There is no such thing as a standard Houchins wedding.
One couple might choose a romantic outdoor civil ceremony followed by a formal wedding breakfast, while another might opt for an intimate ceremony in the Drawing Room followed by a relaxed celebration in the barn.
Others may fill the wedding garden with flowers, festoon lights and garden games before transforming the barn for an energetic evening reception.
The beauty of Houchins is that it gives you the freedom to create.
The modern barn provides a perfect backdrop for contemporary styling, while the farmhouse offers historic character and the grounds bring an abundance of natural beauty.
The combination makes it possible to create a traditional venue feel with a modern twist - or to go in an entirely different direction.
For multicultural and Asian weddings, the venue’s flexibility is another advantage, with dry-hire options allowing couples to bring in their preferred caterers and suppliers.
Whatever your plans, the Houchins team is there to help bring them together, with nothing feeling like too much trouble.

A setting for every season
Although summer weddings naturally make the most of the wedding garden and amazing outdoor space, Houchins works beautifully throughout the year.
Spring brings blossom, fresh greenery and lighter evenings. Summer opens the grounds for outdoor ceremonies, drinks and photographs. Autumn brings rich colours and a cosy atmosphere, while winter showcases the farmhouse and barn at their most atmospheric.
The venue’s flexibility means you do not have to rely on the weather to create a beautiful wedding.
On colder days, the house and barn provide warmth and atmosphere. In warmer months, guests can spill outside and enjoy the grounds.
It’s this balance between indoor elegance and outdoor simplicity that makes Houchins such a versatile wedding venue.
The perfect place to begin your happy ever after
Ultimately, choosing a wedding venue is about more than ticking boxes.
It’s about finding somewhere that makes you feel excited when you arrive for your initial viewing. Somewhere you can picture walking down the aisle, raising a glass with your loved one, sitting down to dinner with your favourite people and dancing until the evening disappears.
Houchins offers all of that - and more.
Its rich history gives the venue a sense of place. Its modern barn provides the space and flexibility today’s weddings demand. Its grounds offer a beautiful backdrop for photographs and outdoor celebrations. Its accommodation allows the party to become a weekend. and its dedicated team provides the experience to make the whole planning process feel manageable.
